LAN Associates was recently recognized by American School & University for its “Outstanding Design” for the Menlo Park Elementary SchoolLAN provided design services for an addition at Menlo Park Elementary School in Edison, NJ.  The school needed a gymnasium and performance space that was separate from its existing cafeteria.  The addition included a multipurpose room and performance stage, eight new classrooms and an instrumental music room.

The multipurpose room has basketball courts and rock climbing walls for physical education classes, and a performance stage for the band and choir.   The space was designed to have ample amounts of diffused daylight by using glazing that creates a brighter interior without glare that may interfere with physical education activities.  Additionally, acoustic block and perforated metal decks were included in the design to reduce sound reverberation.  A new exterior entrance was included that features a lobby with a 3D accent wall with color changing LED’s for a variety of performances, sporting events, and other community events.  The exterior of the building was designed with brick and metal panels to match the existing school building design.

“The project approach focused on seamlessly integrating the exterior of the existing school with the new multipurpose addition,” said James Chen, LAN Project Architect, “The multipurpose room design maximizes daylighting strategies that create a brighter interior and perforated metal decks to reduce sound reverberation.”

Once a year, American School & University honors schools and universities for their outstanding learning environments by having a panel of juror’s award firms for the best interior designs.  The jurors are comprised of school administrators and AIA-member architects as they judge each project following a set of guidelines and requirements.  For nearly thirty years, the Educational Interiors Showcase has been recognizing schools that recently have undergone renovating, additions, or improved their facilities.
