Mamaroneck School District voters overwhelmingly passed a $9.3 million bond referendum for the school district to upgrade its gyms, locker rooms and sports amenities.
The renovations will include two girls’ locker rooms, a boy’s locker room and the wrestling room, while creating a “free-movement” gym and a multi-purpose physical education classroom. All of the improvements will be made to Mamaroneck High School, and construction is set to begin Summer of 2017.
Mike McGovern, Vice President of LAN Associates previously said the facilities are cramped, deteriorating and have exceeded their useful life expectancy and are in need of replacement, “This is great news for Mamaroneck School District. The upgrades are well needed and will vastly improve student amenities.”
After a review of the district’s conditions, LAN Associates devised a plan to repurpose underutilized space and optimize existing space to expand the number of physical education teaching stations and upgrade facilities.
“We thank all community members who came out to vote. Clearly, the community saw that the work was necessary to maintain a safe, healthy environment for our students. This work had been deferred in three sets of previous building plans. It was time,” schools Superintendent Robert Shaps said in a statement.
