To accommodate a significant rise in the number of student drivers, the Waldwick Board of Education retained LAN Associates to provide a parking solution that would enable the district’s High School to handle the increased number of cars during school days, after-school athletic events, and weekends. The scope of work included expanding the existing parking lot and milling and repaving other key areas.
LAN surveyed the area and strategically realigned existing parking lot areas to increase the number of parking spots. At the same time, the design team identified underutilized zones as areas to expand the lot. Understanding that fire access and pedestrian routes cross the site, the design team had to navigate and provide compliant access ways for all forms of traffic. Overall, the design added over 75 new parking spaces, almost doubling the lot’s capacity.
The increase in impervious area required a new solution for stormwater control. LAN’s Civil Engineering Department provided designs for new underground chambers to regulate stormwater flow and prevent it from overwhelming downstream systems. The project was also constructed alongside athletic field upgrades, requiring close coordination of construction documents and contractors.
Beyond the expansion, the team installed new site lighting throughout the project area and milled and repaved the upper lot to refresh all parking areas for the upcoming school year.
