Eastern Christian Middle School in Wyckoff, New Jersey, celebrated the official opening of its new addition with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on February 12th. The event was attended by students, teachers, school and municipal officials, project contractor KV Builders, and project architect LAN Associates, who also provided interior design, engineering, environmental, surveying, and construction administration services to complete the project.
Faced with a rapidly expanding student population and a strict timeline for removing temporary modular classrooms, LAN Associates’ work began with a feasibility study that developed multiple possible solutions to address the need for expanded classroom space, comply with existing setbacks, and maintain recreation areas on the school property.
The approved concept was a six-classroom, 9,000 sf addition that includes four standard classrooms, one special education classroom, and one flexible classroom designed for art, science, or other subjects. The new space also includes restrooms and a small-group instruction room, which is directly connected to the school’s existing west end. This addition was designed to seamlessly blend with the existing school’s exterior aesthetic while delivering the necessary upgrades.

Inside the new addition, LAN focused on integrating Eastern Christian Schools’ branding, highlighting its bold blue and gold school colors, eagle crest logo, and other dynamic imagery. LAN introduced these elements into both the corridors and classrooms, creating inspiring areas for student interaction, discussion, and collaboration. Each space includes new graphic displays, self-healing tackboards, and a connection to the school’s core values.
In the new classrooms, the school sought a design that did not overshadow the existing classrooms while still bringing a breath of modernity. LAN provided new focal points for the teaching wall, highlighted by a gold band that rises from the floor to the overhead soffit, with accent bands of blue on the floor. Each space was then equipped with large storage walls, providing new casework, wardrobes, open shelving, and tackable wall space to meet the diverse needs of each class.
The entire school also received new double-stacked lockers and corridor designs featuring district branding. The addition is fully air-conditioned, and the project included various other capital improvements throughout the school, including a full roof replacement.
