Ridgewood High School officially celebrated the opening of its newly renovated Learning Commons on Tuesday, November 11 at 6 p.m. The ceremony included comments by Superintendent Dr. Daniel Fishbein, Board of Education president Ms. Sheila Brogan, RHS principal Dr. Thomas Gorman and Ms. Lori Weil.
LAN was hired by Ridgewood Board of Education to design a new larger 6,500 sf Learning Commons incorporating the latest technologies to enhance both today’s different teaching methodologies and the overall student learning experience. The space was designed with different zones of activities to match specific learning experiences. Small conference rooms with various types of furniture were provided to allow different types of study and group work to take place by students and faculty. The general reading area allows for teachers to address a class in a traditional setting, however the student tables specified can be easily moved and rearranged in a variety of ways to allow for different learning zones depending on the task at hand. A small group instructional area was incorporated into the Learning Commons to allow for more focused student-teacher interaction. A large portion of the Learning Commons was designed as a lounge also inclusive of high counter seating, lounge seating, study carrels, and a new OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) center. The integrated lounge provides another type of a study environment for the students.
