Edgewater Park Township Police and Court Building

Project Overview

Edgewater Park Township retained LAN to provide architecture and MEP engineering services to design a new public safety building. Starting with a previously undeveloped parcel of land, the design team worked closely with the police department, community director, and other stakeholders to map out project goals and objectives to meet the community’s needs.

Inspired by the heavily wooded 5.5-acre site, the new Edgewater Park Township Police & Court Building will welcome visitors with a wooden truss canopy that extends into the main lobby. Various types of stone are incorporated throughout the design, complementing the building’s wood, brick, and cast stone elements and creating a modern take on a traditional look. Additional spaces incorporated in the design will allow the police department to grow. These include department offices, locker rooms, a fitness room, a sally port, holding cells, a processing area, and investigation rooms.

In addition to its use for the police department, the space was designed to serve the local Edgewater Park Township community in other ways. The courtrooms will provide a space for legal proceedings and serve as a gathering space for community events during the evenings. A training room will be available for community use when not utilized by the police department.

With its use as both a municipal and public space, careful attention was given to the layout of the new building. The site and building security, orientation, and internal circulation were key design elements in creating a harmonious layout.
