Seeking to enhance the athletic facilities on the northern side of the campus, the Waldwick Board of Education retained LAN Associates. The scope of work included navigating difficult site constraints and designing new artificial turf multi-sport fields to shape the future of the district’s athletics program.
Due to the site’s adjacency to NJDEP-regulated waterways, LAN’s team needed to investigate and identify the applicable regulatory restrictions. LAN surveyed the area, delineated the wetlands, and worked alongside the various regulatory authorities that have jurisdiction to provide the largest feasible field.
Following these efforts, the design team provided an expansive design that improved the area’s entrance and visitor experience and created a baseball/multi-sport field with lights for night games. Accessible access points were enhanced, including a new walkway leading to a post-game pavilion. This raised area features new, curved, mortarless block walls that navigate the change in grade, while also utilizing stamped concrete to highlight zones of interaction. Spectators are then guided to new bleachers, wrapping around home plate, along with new press box and restroom facilities, so all amenities are close at hand. New dugouts, bullpens, batting cages, scoreboards, and other necessary improvements were also designed.
The project successfully achieved the district’s goal to expand available playtime by providing a facility that is available for nighttime games and has the increased durability needed to prevent inclement weather from restricting field use. To ensure the field could accommodate various sports activities, the design team avoided any lines in the baseball infield.
