LAN Wins Outstanding Design Award for Mamaroneck STEAM Lab

LAN’s design of the new STEAM Lab at Mamaroneck High School has been honored by the national publication Learning by Design with its Outstanding Project Award. The 5,920 sf space, which has been dubbed the “CoLab,” includes three different connected rooms, state-of-the-art equipment, and a layout with furnishings designed to foster collaboration and contemporary learning techniques.  LAN’s New York office has a decades-long history of working with the Mamaroneck Union Free School District, and this project was funded as part of their 2019 school bond referendum. LAN’s services included architecture, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering, as well as construction administration.

The award-winning project is centered around a large design studio that inspires creativity through a sleek atmosphere and space planning. The color scheme was kept minimal to allow for the display of student work throughout. Taking advantage of the high vertical clearance of the space, custom ceilings were designed to bring a unique and modern feel. This room is flanked on one side by Think Pods for breakaway learning and a Prototyping Lab on the other side. Two operable partitions can be opened to create a larger space and connect the two learning environments.

The Prototyping Lab includes additive and subtractive modeling equipment and movable worktables for assembly. Additionally, metal and wood shops are equipped with the newest technology, including a plasma cutter and CNC machine, allowing students multiple outlets for hands-on creation.

The design incorporated flexibility for future improvements to account for evolving pedagogical and technological advancements. The result is the perfect space for students to work, present, and receive instruction.

“The integration of lighting and color evokes a tech campus feel, effectively combining technology and furniture,” remarked the Learning by Design jury. “The impressive POE results highlight this renovation’s transformation into a 21st-century learning environment on a smaller scale. The project demonstrates good cost efficiency per square foot and honestly presents its POE results, something many submissions lack. I particularly like the light and airy design of the think pods.”

LAN Associates has been a leader in educational facility design since 1965. The Mamaroneck CoLab was designed by LAN’s Goshen, New York office, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

Learning By Design recognizes the nation’s leading architectural firms with awards judged by industry professionals. LAN’s design of the Mamaroneck CoLab was honored in the fall 2024 issue of the publication.
