LAN was retained by the State University of New York (SUNY) Purchase College to help design a new facility that engages both seniors and college students in one diverse learning community. LAN’s scope of work included mechanical, electrical, plumbing, structural, fire protection, and LEED design services.
The goal of the project was to create a new facility that joins the existing college campus and a senior living center through an “Innovation Center” that provides students of all ages with new opportunities for mentoring, tutoring, and guest lecturing. Residents are encouraged to immerse themselves within the campus through academics and athletics, while students use the new building for career training and professional engagement. The space will also house health and wellness facilities, a continuing-care community, and outdoor gathering spaces.
A major objective of the project was to implement green design strategies for sustainable building construction and site development. In accordance with the college’s requirement, the project will pursue a LEED-silver certification focusing on reducing energy consumption and operating and maintenance costs. The phased project will include mid-rise buildings constructed for independent living apartments, assisted living, memory care, wellness and commons areas, as well as private villas.
The plan will incorporate outdoor green spaces typical of traditional university grounds, integrated harmoniously to enhance the natural beauty of the suburban campus. The proposed housing is for residents ages 62 and older, located on 40 acres within the 500-acre campus.
The project is currently in the planning, design, and approval process with an anticipated completion in 2021.
