The Empty Sky 911 Memorial

Project Overview

The Empty Sky 911 Memorial is located within Liberty State Park, in Jersey City, NJ, directly across the Hudson River from the World Trade Center site. The memorial is dedicated to the residents who lost their lives during the tragic attacks in 1993 and 2001. The design of the memorial represents the twin walls of the World Trade Center laying on their sides symbolizing the fallen towers.

LAN worked with the New Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry to provide updated lighting designs to replace existing fixtures that were damaged during Superstorm Sandy in 2012. The unique project fell outside the traditional approaches for photometric analyses and luminaire constructability. The task included several challenges such as color and minimum levels of vertical illumination to effectively illuminate names of the victims which are etched in the brushed stainless-steel surface. The design was also built to withstand future storms without being damaged. There were no viable fixture options to accommodate the specific requirements, so custom fabricated fixtures were designed and used.
