LAN provided engineering services for the design of new mechanical systems at the Hommocks Middle School. The project consisted of the removal of all existing HVAC equipment in a total affected area of 150,000 sf. This was a complete rebuild that required expertise in unit ventilators, air handling units, cooling towers, boilers, baseboard heating elements, convectors, and cabinet heaters, as well as associated piping, pumps, and insulation.
The existing equipment was replaced with high efficiency, fully modulating, condensing boilers and pumps with variable frequency drives, roof top heating and ventilation units with energy recovery, new cooling towers, and CO2 demand control ventilation for large spaces. An all new direct digital control building management system was also integrated into the existing district wide system.
The new equipment was designed to make each “pod” almost fully independent from one another with each “pod” now containing its own boiler plant, air handlers and roof top units. Other services included providing new boilers and domestic hot water heaters for the pool wing to separate the heating requirements for that space from those of the school building. To minimize student disruption, the project was broken into two phases spanning two summer breaks, with two “pods” being completed per phase.
