LEGOLAND New York Resort

LEGOLAND New York Resort

LAN Associates has been working with LEGOLAND New York Resort since its conception. We continually collaborate on various projects from attraction design to public-facing facilities and back-of-house infrastructure projects.

LAN works closely with key LEGOLAND creative teams, operations/facility staff, safety directors, project managers, and additional intellectual property owners and provides creative input on projects. We thread the needle between existing park elements and local considerations, while adhering to strict safety parameters and integrating LEGOLAND’s universal theming design.

Our knowledge of the local area and regulatory processes has helped the destination navigate the complexities of theme park projects while maintaining positive relationships with local stakeholders, ensuring the community’s support for initiatives.

Ocean Explorer

Ocean Explorer

LAN Associates was retained by LEGOLAND New York Resort to provide creative services for the Ocean Explorer Galleon Ship attraction. With a theme based on current LEGO sets, the attraction allows guests to set sail on the high seas aboard a swinging ship.  Guests approach the ship along a concrete, LEGO-inspired pier with faux water effects on either side. As they get closer, they are greeted by a large-scale LEGO shark model and larger-than-life minifigures, providing photo opportunities with the ship rocking behind them. Park guests then continue their journey into the “research lab,” where they can engage with vertical brick builds and other learning opportunities focused on ocean research.

With two different queue lines, LAN provided options for “Reserve N Ride” and general queuing depending on the number of guests. As part of the design efforts, the ride envelope is submerged on the site to provide universal access on grade with sloping platforms for additional access to the higher portions of the ride. All aspects of the guest experience are handicap accessible, so guests of all ages and abilities can enjoy the ride.

Minifigure Skyflyer

Minifigure Skyflyer

Seeking a way to aid guests in traversing the steep terrain that connects the upper and lower sections of the park, LEGOLAND New York Resort retained LAN Associates to help design the new Minifigure Skyflyer. Modeled after a Leitner POMA Gondola ski lift, the attraction climbs over 80 feet vertically and almost 1,000 feet horizontally in less than two minutes. The experience is enhanced with LEGO theming, guiding guests through a fun experience.

The design starts with a themed exterior queue, leading guests to the point of take-off. Riders interact with a series of mini-figures, screens, and other themed elements as they traverse from one end to another. The theming elements examine fun ways to provide power through dance and unique forms of flight, such as rocket-powered RVs, before ending up at the best solution, the gondola cabins of the Minifigure Skyflyer.

Once through the entry point, guests follow a colorful rainbow, blueprints of design ideas, and an energized dance floor to get off the ground. Finally, before the point of takeoff, guests are led through colorful shade portals, motioning them into the pods.

Splash Battle

Splash Battle

To expedite the project and reduce costs, LAN was hired to provide value engineering for the design of the Splash Battle building. This is part of the Splash Battle Ride, which allows guests to board a ship that moves through a water-filled track. The ship is armed with water guns that can be aimed at other ships on the ride and guests waiting outside the attraction.

As part of LAN’s scope of work on this project, our team designed metal stud shear walls in lieu of structural steel beams and columns. This modification reduced the substantial completion date for the project by six to eight weeks due to the long lead time for steel beams and columns. The exterior cladding was simplified by using an Exterior Insulation Finishing System (EIFS) for the castle battlements. The building program consists of an Electrical Room, Emergency Electrical Room, and Outdoor Queue area for the Splash Battle ride.

Additionally, LAN designed the Themed Tower in the middle of the water ride with metal stud shear walls and EIFS cladding. Throughout construction, LAN provided construction administration services for the project.

LEGO DUPLO Peppa Pig Playscape

LEGO DUPLO Peppa Pig Playscape

Merging two high-profile intellectual properties into one imaginative recreation space, LAN Associates aided LEGOLAND New York Resort in bringing the new Peppa Pig Playscape to life. Upon entry, children are greeted by a new portal, welcoming them to the Peppa Pig celebration. The play area is intertwined with the “muddy puddles” theme in the show, and the new inclusive playground lets guests bounce, slide, and swing in a landscape geared toward younger park guests.

Opposite the playground stands a new amphitheater, covered by a tensile fabric structure, designed to host Peppa Pig puppet shows. Framed in the distance is Peppa’s iconic house, perched upon its grassy hill, with Peppa and her friends waiting for guests to arrive. Hidden behind the main attraction is a new sensory room to aid park guests in self-regulation and reconnecting the senses before going back to experience the other attractions in the park.

The design itself had to navigate a once-sloped terrain to provide a fully accessible experience. It was designed with new themed fences, and a variety of hardscapes and softscapes were utilized to designate the different zones while remaining inclusive.

LEGOLAND New York Resort
Park Improvements

MINILAND

Within a year of opening its doors, LEGOLAND New York Resort noticed the linear paths in the park were creating congested pedestrian walkways. LAN was retained to solve this issue by designing a multi-directional connection and entertainment hub in the center of one of the park’s main areas, MINILAND.

With an elevation difference of over 75 feet between the top and bottom of the park, creating a journey that did not seem overwhelming while providing unique moments for guests was a challenge. The new hub provides pathways for guests to explore the various themed areas throughout MINILAND, a snack stand, and a restroom, while allotting space for additional refreshment options and points of sale in the future.

Shade Structures

LEGOLAND New York Resort retained LAN to investigate shading opportunities throughout the park’s most populated areas. With a short window between construction and the park’s operation, LAN devised a solution that included custom prefabricated structures that could be quickly placed on-site and aligned with the area’s aesthetics.

At the Ninjago, Castle, and City clusters, the design team prepared stick-built shade structures utilizing sliding shade fabrics for a permanent structure that can be adjusted for the harsher winter months. Along the park’s “City Boulevard,” the new prefabricated structures were designed to resemble bus stops and harborside retreats, while providing minimal interruption to the hustle and bustle of LEGO City.

Christmas Tree

LEGOLAND New York Resort tasked LAN with designing the supporting infrastructure for new holiday decor. Recognizing that these attractions are seasonal, the team was tasked with designing a flexible layout to support other themed elements for other holidays and seasons. The final structure makes it easy for staff to install and replace multi-story themed elements within a few hours, allowing them to celebrate every season with a cohesive design within the resort’s landscape.

Master Model Builder Shop

LAN Associates was commissioned to help transform the existing model-building space at LEGOLAND New York Resort into a new Master Model Builder Shop. This interactive environment allows guests to observe and engage with model builders as they work on the LEGO models that are placed throughout the park.

The project involved significant interior alterations, including eliminating a structural column and reinforcing a steel beam to allow for a wide, approximately 27-foot opening fitted with an Andersen Multi-Slide door system. The design allowed the door panels to stack on one side, offering an open, flexible connection between guests and the model builders.

Back-of-House Projects

Legoland 5

Transfer Building

LAN designed two back-of-house transfer building structures for LEGOLAND New York Resort. The 3,721 sf buildings house trash and recyclable compactors, which are utilized by the entire park.

Maintenance Facilities

LAN designed a one-story 20,800 sf maintenance building with an S-1 occupancy of 5,260 sf, and a second occupancy in the building is a 15,540 sf F-1 that includes offices, workshops, a model shop, signage shop, carpentry shop, and a mechanical shop.

Guard Booth

LAN designed a 650 sf guard booth that serves as the control point for the park’s back-of-house area. It is divided into two sections: the main area and a smaller storage area.
