Passaic County Courthouse Dome Restoration

Project Overview

The County of Passaic contracted LAN to design restoration and repairs on the interior and exterior of the Courthouse Complex in Paterson, NJ. The complex consists of four buildings with different architectural styles constructed at different times. One of the restorations involved the District Courthouse’s interior stained-glass dome which was built in the 1890s. The interior dome consists of sixteen sections with seven rings.

During LAN’s survey the original glass was found to have numerous missing pieces and cracks. Working with Drill Construction Inc. and Femenella & Associates, the glass was painstakingly cleaned on both sides. Missing sections of glass were replaced with new glass that matched the original colors. Broken sections were repaired and new lead was installed to maintain the structural integrity.

Upon completion of the repairs, new RGBW LED lights were installed within the dome to add lighting and enhance the color of the stained glass. Working with Liberty Lighting, sixteen LED fixtures were arranged at various levels and locations to properly fill the dome without shadows or dark areas. The lights are fully programmable with multiple effects such as, color shifting and rolling, and are easily programmed from a central control module.
