NJDOT Lobby Renovations

Project Overview

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) hired LAN to design a new modern lobby to welcome guests into their headquarters in Ewing, NJ. The new design focuses on the concept of “lines of motion” to promote a welcoming atmosphere and guest experience. As visitors enter, they are greeted by a new ceiling constructed of acoustic baffles and new accent lighting. A large lighting fixture, reminiscent of motion sequence, can be admired from both stories of the lobby.

Glass panels separate the main lobby from office areas beyond, seamlessly blending security precautions into the design. The panels transition from semi-opaque glass above to a custom antique map of Trenton allowing glimpses of areas behind. These areas include an artifact display that showcases time capsules, antique mile markers, and more items relevant to the organization.

Mirrored on either side of the lobby are large acoustic wall panels that highlight the check-in desk and visual displays while also reducing sound reverberation. The design includes an array of lounge seating and “touchdown” centers which guests can use for informal meetings, to sit and charge mobile devices, or browse company directories.

The NJDOT requested the design team continue to adhere to the new branding LAN designed when remodeling an additional lobby on the opposite side of the building. Focusing on a grand staircase while still promoting a line of security, LAN designed a modern layout where employees and guests can interact and collaborate. The grand staircase is highlighted by an acoustic shingle wall along with the map graphics seen in the front lobby with additional “touchdown” areas.
