Fifty Years of LAN
When I recently spoke to LAN’s Founder, John Lacz, about this accomplishment, his first comment was “Wow” and that he never dreamed about celebrating 50 years of the business when he started LAN back in June of 1965. John talked fondly about his first foray into the A/E world when he worked for Charles D. Geiger during high school and college, and his “pre-LAN” professional career at both the United States Air Force and Curtiss-Wright. He also spoke of the early years of LAN, when things were tough financially, and how difficult it was to run a business and help raise three young children. Luckily for all of us, his hard work paid off and he was able to “break even” after five years. The rest, as they say, is history.
We are extremely fortunate to be in a situation celebrating fifty years in business, especially in today’s ever-changing times. According to a recent article in “Business Insider”, the average lifespan of an S&P 500 company decreased from 67 years in the 1920’s to just 15 years today; and the numbers for small businesses, like LAN, are even worse! I wonder if John would have left Corporate America to start LAN if he knew these statistics back in 1965?
As we kick off our year of celebrations, we recently put together a video of some of our larger projects; sort of a “LAN’s Greatest Hits”. We had a lot of fun putting it together and hope you enjoy it as much as we do – you can check it out here.
But instead of spending any more time looking back on the past, I’d like to take this opportunity to look ahead to the future of LAN. As you will see in the following articles, we have some big things in the pipeline. From the new state-of-the-art Advanced Coating Technologies/Pratt & Whitney production facility, to “The Vista” at Christian Health Care Center, to the construction of the new James Monroe School in Edison, 2015 looks to be an exciting year for all of us at LAN!
On behalf of all of us at LAN, I would like to thank each and every one of you. Our clients. Our sub-consultants. Our vendors. Our contractors. Our friends and family. You have all played such an important role in our success and we look forward to seeing where the next fifty years takes us. We hope to see many of you at our fiftieth anniversary celebration later this year! In the meantime, please be sure to check us out on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn – we have a lot of exciting social media campaigns going on to help us celebrate with all of you!
